Transitioning Families-New York State Parent Education and Awareness Program
[ More Services]

The New York State Parent Education and Awareness Program is the initiative of the Honorable Judith S. Kaye, Chief Judge, New York State Court System.  Her enduring concern for the welfare of children and recognition of the important role that parent education can play in aimporving the lives of children have fueled her vision to make quality parent education available across New York State.  (New York State Parent Education Handbook)

Catholic Charities of Fulton and Montgomery Counties was certified to provide this service in May 2007. Our agency accepts court referrals statewide.  Please contact your local family court or your legal representative for more information.

What is Transitioning Families?
Transitioning Families is a program designed to educate divorcing or separating parents about the impact of their breakup on their children. The primary goal of the program is to teach parents ways they can reduce the stress of family changes and protect their children from the negative effects of ongoing parental conflict.

What is the Program Format?
The program consists of two sessions lasting 2.5 hours each session. Classes are limited to 20 people. Participants will not be placed in the same class as the other parent of your child(ren).

Is this program for everyone?
Transitioning Families may not be appropriate when domestic abuse is present. If you are involved with an abusive partner, you should contact the Transitioning Families Facilitator at 518-842-4202 ext. 3132 for further information before enrolling.

Is there a fee for the program?
A $50.00 non-refundable fee, payable by check or money order, must be submitted with your enrollment in order for you to be enrolled in a class. Please note: There will be a fee for returned checks.

Are there any materials provided?
Participants will be provided with a Resource Manual and Handbook for Parents which contains a compilation of resources for parents and children to locate assistance and support including local human services agencies, reading materials and informative articles. In addition parents will be provided access to brochures and fliers with information on various local resources at each session.

When and Where are classes held?
Locations and times of classes will not be publicized. Classes will be held on a monthly basis. You will be advised of the class in which you have been enrolled via letter. This will include a map and other pertinent information to confirm your registration.

What are the attendance requirements?
You must attend both classes to receive a Certificate of Compliance. Registration is held 1/2 hour prior to the class. Classes start promptly. Anyone more than 15 minutes late will be denied admittance. If you fail to attend a class for which you are registered, you will need to submit a new registration. You will not be registered into another class until all new applicants have first been placed. Children are NOT permitted to attend classes.
