Reality Check is a youth-led movement within the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Tobacco Control. A part of the newly formed Advancing Tobacco Control Program of Fulton, Montgomery and Hamilton Counties, they are committed to working with the youth of this catchment area to expose the manipulative and deceptive marketing practices of the tobacco industry.
Reality Check provides members are teens, 13-18 years old who are provided with the skills and strategies to encourage their peers, community members and community leaders to recognize that:
1... tobacco is the number one preventable cause of death and disease in the world
2... tobacco companies continue to target teens and young adults as "replacement smokers" for their customers who die every day.
3...the tobacco industry uses product placement, movies, media, and other ways of advertising as a way to keep relevant and in the faces of their current and potential customers.
4…. we ALL need to take action to get tobacco and the tobacco industry out of our communities. Reality Check allows teens to stand up to Big Tobacco and let them know that WE WON'T BE BOUGHT.
